“I Make 6 Figures a Year Renting Out Kids’ Costumes!”

Necessity truly is the mother of invention. Stay-at-home mom Lori Blumenstock found a way to add razzle-dazzle to children’s lives — and her bank account — after launching her own boutique. Now she makes six figures and has turned her side hustle into a full-blown career!

The Origins of Lori’s Business

‘‘Six years ago, I was in search of the ultimate princess costume for my daughter for our upcoming Disney trip,” Blumenstock tells Woman’s World. “When I realized how overpriced the options were, I looked online for a way to rent a costume, but found nothing. As a stay-at-home mom, I decided to take matters into my own hands and help others experience the magic of an affordable costume.

In 2016, I launched Your Fairy Godmother, the first children’s luxury costume and couture dress rental boutique in the United States. Since I was totally new to the business, I started small. I connected with a couple of designers who sew costumes, bought about 10 designs, and launched the website and social media accounts.”

Side Hustle to Career

Blumenstock admits this process has been hard work — but it doesn’t sound like she’s slowing down anytime soon. “As the company’s only employee, I wear all the hats!” she explains. “The bulk of my time is spent on customer service and working with vendors (I source the dresses from Etsy.com and children’s couture designers). Most of my customers are moms like me, who want to rent dresses for parties, Disney trips, or any other special occasion in their child’s life, as well as photographers who are looking for outfits for photo shoots.

What started as a small side hustle has expanded into a full-time job that brings in six figures per year! My goal is to buy a beach house and grow into a multimillion-dollar company that my kids can take over one day. The best part is seeing the smiles on kids’ faces and hearing from mothers how beautiful their child felt in their rental costume. There is not enough magic in the world today, so it is my goal to touch as many children’s lives in a positive way as possible.”
