It’s always easy to find volunteers to cook the barbecue, but to clean it? Not so much…
Rather than leaving the barbecue to clean until next time (something we’re all guilty of), here are five simple steps to keep your barbecue spick and span after each use.
What you will need
- Concentrated dishwashing liquid
- Tub of hot water
- Stiff-bristled brush, ideally for bbq
- Soft cleaning clothing
- Paper towel or clean, dry rags
- Cooking oil
- Kitty litter
1. Prepare the BBQ
If your cooking plate has a channel to collect grease, begin by sprinkling it with kitty litter.
2. Remove the Grease
Once grease has been absorbed, sweep up the clumps using a dustpan and broom.
3. Clean the Inside of the BBQ
Add a little concentrated dishwashing liquid to a tub half filled with hot water. Wearing gloves, remove the cooking plate, submerge in the tub and scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Scrub the bars gently with a regular kitchen scrubbing brush to avoid damaging the surface of the grill. Dry thoroughly with paper towel, then lightly coat with oil.
Tip: Use a stiff wire scrubbing brush to remove any hardened residue and then a regular kitchen brush for the rest. A mild detergent will suffice, to avoid damaging the surface of the grill. You can also purchase specialist barbecue cleaning equipment from most barbecue retailers and hardware stores.
4. Clean the Outside of the BBQ
Clean the dials, hood and exterior with a little concentrated dishwashing liquid mixed with hot water and dry with paper towel.
5. Oil Up
When clean, spray with a light coat of vegetable oil to protect the surface of the grill.
Tip: If you’re ready to try something a little different, add some zest! Simply heat the grill up high then rub two halves of lemons dipped in salt into the grill surface. The acidity and abrasiveness in the salted lemons will break down any stubborn fat and grease to make light work of cleaning.
