A lot of people who have lost weight will tell you that there was a wake-up call that finally forced them to get up and get active. For some, that moment is when excess weight leads to injury.
That was the case for reddit user SNMSuccess. As a result of being “morbidly obese,” she developed heel spurs, which are a build-up of calcium on the underside of the heel bone. Sometimes heel spurs don’t hurt at all; other times they feel like a “jabbing or aching sensation on or under the heel bone.” Ouch!
For the first year (yes, losing weight takes time!), she started following a low-carb diet. Sounds doable, right? She didn’t count calories, and she exercised by lifting weights. Progress was gradual, but that was her intention: A symptom of weight loss that many people don’t talk about is the excess skin that’s left over when the body sheds a large amount of weight in a relatively short period of time. To combat this issue, SNMSuccess “coasted for two years, only losing about 30 pounds and going slow to allow my skin to recover.”
Over the course of three years, she was able to lose an amazing 160 pounds!
“This year I decided to reach my goal of 50 percent weight loss. I’ve been low carb, but counting calories to 1500-1600 per day. I got tired of lifting so I take fitness classes at the gym 4-5 days per week (yoga, Zumba, boot camp, and Body works).”
Today, after some tiny fluctuations, she weighs 147 pounds, down from 297. That’s a net loss of 150 pounds — and it shows. She can fit her whole body into one of her old pant legs!
“The most important thing I’ve learned is to be flexible. There are days when I want to eat unhealthy food, so I’m sure to adjust my portion size, enjoy, and eat healthy the rest of the day. Also, allowing myself to change my workout when I’m bored is a huge help. As long as I do SOMETHING active, I don’t beat myself up.”
If you give yourself time and make your weight loss a priority, good things will happen!
