Pedro Viloria was working a morning shift at a McDonald’s in Doral, Florida, when he noticed a woman driving erratically. Knowing there were kids inside, he had to do something. Now, his actions have people calling him a hero.
Viloria was working the drive-thru when a woman came to his window. According to Viloria, she had no problem ordering or paying, but when he handed her the food, he noticed something was wrong.
“I see she’s hardly breathing and I thought that’s not normal,” Viloria told NBC 6.
The car kept moving, and Viloria realized the driver couldn’t control it.
“Her kids were screaming,” he said. “I thought, I gotta get to that car.”
So he did just that. Footage from inside the McDonald’s shows Viloria jumping through the window and running after the vehicle.
“I ran as fast as I could, put myself in front of the car,” he said.
Fortunately the car hit the curb, stopping it from driving into oncoming traffic. When he turned around, help was already there.
“When I looked back there was all these rescue” workers, he said.
According to the McDonald’s video, another woman in the restaurant ran to help, as well as a police officer who just happened to be having breakfast.
“I was with the kids–I was trying to tell them it will be all right, the kids were breaking my soul,” he said.
Viloria said his brain switched into “hero mode.” He never questioned whether he should save a perfect stranger, he just did. And it turns out that the woman in distress–who hasn’t been identified yet–just so happened to be an off-duty cop.
“What! I saved an officer’s life? I can’t believe this,” he said.
The woman was taken to the hospital, but there’s no word on her condition.
Alex Menedez, the owner of that South Florida McDonald’s had this to say about Viloria: “He is an excellent employee, so it didn’t surprise me that he took immediate action and jumped through a window to help save this woman.” What an amazing young man!
