It’s official: we’ve entered the era of personalized beauty and there’s no turning back. From hair serums that are formulated specifically for your strand needs to bespoke pillows built specifically to help you get the ultimate beauty sleep, the innovations just keep coming. The latest company to make waves on the customized front? Atolla Skincare ($45 per month, Atolla.com).
Launched in 2019 by three MIT grads, Atolla is a subscription skincare company that creates algorithm-based serums that will change with your evolving complexion. Let’s break that down a bit, shall we? Each month, Atolla will send you a newly customized facial serum that’s been adjusted from months prior based on changes noted in your skin via an at-home test.
Like most personalized systems, you have to fill out an online survey to start, at which point you’ll answer basic questions about your complexion, lifestyle, and environment — all factors that play a big role in the overall health of your epidermis.
Next, you’ll order one of Atolla’s “Skin Health Kit” ($20). This is comprised of special sensor strips that you’ll press onto different areas of your face to measure your skin’s oil, moisture, and pH levels. Simply take a picture of the sensor results and upload them to the company’s Skin Health app to share them with Atolla.
From there, Atolla will get to work creating your custom serum. With each bottle, you’ll receive a written break down explaining why each ingredient was chosen that will educate you about your skincare in the process.
There are two different levels of ingredients: principal ingredients and supporting ingredients.
Principal ingredients, depending on your skin, can include a mix of skincare staples, such as hydrating coconut extract, vitamin C, moisture-locking hyaluronic acid, discoloration-fighting tree bark, acne-fighting salicylic acid, rumex extract, (a plant extract that soothes irritation) and alpha arbutin — a plant-derived antioxidant that helps even skin tone.
With each skin check-in, targeted, supporting ingredients will be added to the mix as needed, like tamarind seel oil (known to protect skin against free radicals), squalane (a lightweight moisturizer), or turmeric extract (known to help calm inflammation).
Your shipment will include a 15 ml bottle, which is designed to last 30 days with proper daily use, plus another smaller testing kit in the same shipment to update Atolla on your skin’s progress.
By measuring and tracking your skin’s habits, the team can develop a single, end-all serum that will work specifically for your unique skin.
Best of all, if after a couple of bottles you’re not feeling this system, you can cancel your subscription at any time, no questions asked.
Launched just this summer, reviewers are already raving about the system.
“You actually learn about your skin while improving it” one happy customer wrote, with another writing, “Their oils feel and smell amazing, plus my skin stays hydrated so much longer!”
