A lot of today’s most popular celebrities have been married at least twice. But while most of us can barely wrap our heads around the idea of having three or four former spouses, it’s nothing compared to classic stars who’ve had up to nine marriages.
Legendary actor Mickey Rooney said the words “I do” over eight times — but this was no surprise, considering he had quite the reputation with women.
“He went through the ladies like a hot knife through fudge,” Ava Gardner once said. The actress married Mickey when she was just 19, and unfortunately, they separated after a year.
According to Mickey, however, his marriages weren’t for show. He admitted that he really did care about his past wives.
“People say, ‘How can you be married eight times?’ But I played the hand dealt me the way I was supposed to. I was friendly with most of my ex-wives. My God, there’s a Mickey Rooney’s Former Wives Marching Band!” he once joked.
Now, whether we’ve been through two divorces or five, we’re in no position to judge these celebrities. Marriages can be tough and it’s sometimes impossible for them to work out. However, knowing that stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Judy Garland have experienced this makes us relate to them all the more.
